Highway traffic deaths hit a 15-year high of 43,443 in 2005, the U.S. gov't said. The fatality rate rose for the first time since '86. About half of motorcycle fatalities involved riders not wearing helmets, while 55% of those killed in vehicles were not wearing seat belts.
So it was more dangerous to be driving in the US, than it was to be stationed in Iraq AND Afganistan combined.
