When it comes to high gas prices, liberals in Congress continue to deceive the American people with bait-and-switch tactics!
Last week, the news hit that British and American intelligence thwarted a massive plot to blow up passenger airplanes over the Atlantic Ocean -- REMINDING ALL OF US THAT THE THREAT OF MIDDLE EASTERN TERRORISTS TARGETING AMERICAN CITIZENS IS STILL VERY REAL!
Just days before that, British Petroleum (BP) announced it will shut down parts of the Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska to effect repairs on a corroded pipeline. It's estimated that the shutdown will result is a sharp decline in domestic oil production -- 400,000 barrels a DAY to be exact -- for the next several months and will drive gasoline prices even higher in the coming months.
And, Iran continues to thumb its nose at the world community and continues to move ahead in the development of technology that will enable them to build and deploy nuclear weapons !
These events -- which all contribute to high gas prices -- should be a huge WAKE-UP CALL!
But liberals in Congress simply see these events as political cover to allow them to fool you yet again and legislate policies that actually drive the price of oil even higher!
In fact, ultra-liberals in Congress, led by Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, John Dingell and Ed Markey are already using the BP incident to pander and score political points with the radical environmental lobby.
Hillary shrieked that "BP should be held responsible." Dingell called BP's actions "appalling."
And Markey -- not missing a beat -- immediately played the class envy card and chastised BP for posting "profits."
And it may shock you to know that while liberals have been bashing Big Oil on the one hand -- they have also been legislatively BLOCKING domestic oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for over a generation and the building of new refineries for over 30 years!
It's time to demand that our leaders in Congress STOP PANDERING, STOP DISTRACTING, STOP FINGER-POINTING and -- once and for all -- institute a policy that will solve our energy problems!
It's time to force our political leaders to do something they've refused to do for over a generation. It's time to END our dependence on Middle Eastern Oil by opening ANWR to environmentally safe exploration and allowing the building of more refineries in the United States.
Would ANWR Solve Our Energy Problems?
Consider the following:
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that tapping ANWR could increase America's domestic oil production by as much as 50 percent per year -- enough to drive the price of gasoline at the pumps way, way down -- but liberals have continually blocked drilling in ANWR.
But it is also believed that drilling in ANWR would:
Replace the one million barrels of oil PER DAY we lost because of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Replace over 30 years of Saudi oil and 58 years of Iraqi oil and take a big bite out of the $150 billion -- that's $150,000,000,000 -- the United States spends each and every year importing foreign oil.
Create over 736,000 new jobs -- that's nearly three quarters of a million -- in the United States.
Raise over $29 billion in federal tax revenues -- that's $29,000,000,000 -- and over $31 billion in state tax revenues over a 15 year period -- without raising taxes.
But ANWR isn't the only oil reserve Hillary, Chuck and the rest of the mouth-frothing "Greenies" have declared off-limits to exploration by American companies.
According to the organization Arctic Power, Alaska could produce more than 33 percent of America's domestic oil production alone if we opened up other sites as well.
Moreover some experts estimate that more oil lies under our Outer Continental Shelf than in all of Saudi Arabia.
Now you know why liberals choose to demonize Big Oil! It distracts you from the truth!
So, Why Aren't We Drilling?
The answer may shock you.
Simply put, liberals LOVE HIGH GAS PRICES!
When liberals weep buckets of tears over the high price of gasoline and attack the oil companies, don't be conned into believing they really feel your pain.
In fact -- truth be told -- they are insanely and passionately in love with high gasoline prices.
"Greenie" websites feature articles with titles like: "More Taxes Please: Why the Price of Gas Is Too Low."
As columnist Ann Coulter put it: "For decades Democrats have been trying to raise the price of gasoline so that the working class will stop their infernal car driving and start riding on buses where they belong."
The Wall Street Journal made the same point: "High [gas] prices have been the prod that the left has favored to persuade Americans to abandon their SUVs and minivans, use mass transit, turn the thermostat down, produce less consumer goods and services, and stop emitting those satanic greenhouse gases."
Sam Kazman -- an expert on gasoline pricing at the Competitive Enterprise Institute -- said: "Why isn't the left dancing in the streets over $3 a gallon gas?"
Actually, liberals are dancing behind closed doors with the shades drawn, because they don't want you and the rest of the American people to know how absolutely ecstatic they are.
And for years they've been trying to drive up the price of gas by increasing taxes at the pump:
In 1993 -- when the Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and White House -- then-President Clinton proposed a 26-cent tax on gas.
When Republicans demanded that the tax be dropped, Big Bad Wolf Al Gore huffed and puffed and said the gas tax was "absolutely not coming out" of the energy bill.
Then-Speaker of the House Tom Foley said: "I'd have a five-cent increase every year for five years."
Not to be outdone, John Kerry (Remember him?) called for a 50-cent gas tax.
It should be obvious. Liberals don't want lower prices at the pump. What they do want is CONTROL.
But Wouldn't Drilling In ANWR Ruin Pristine Wilderness?
Of course not!
Under current legislation, drilling in ANWR is limited to a 2,000-acre area of land.
To give you an idea of the size of this parcel, 2,000 acres is equal to:
The size of the Pinehurst Golf Club in North Carolina.
1/15th the size of Disney World.
1/4th the size of Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
To make more comparisons:
If ANWR were the size of the floor of the U.S. Senate, the 2,000-acre parcel would be roughly the size of a letter.
If ANWR were the size of a tennis court, the 2,000-acre parcel would be the size of a magazine.
If ANWR were the size of a football field, the 2,000-acre parcel would be 2 x 3 feet.
Would drilling in ANWR ruin large areas of pristine wilderness? Hardly, but don't depend on radical environmentalists to tell you the truth.
