Remember how the idea of a toll road was sold to the public? Initially funds would be used to finance the actual construction costs of the road. Then instead of removing the toll, it was claimed that the tolls would be used to maintain the transit infrastructure thus avoiding higher taxes in other areas of the economy.
Well, politicians in some states just can't avoid the urge to screw the very same people that put them in office:
Indiana officials signed an agreement to turn the 157-mile Indiana Toll Road over to a Spanish and Australian consortium that will operate it for a profit for the next 75 years. Opponents have sued, saying the state constitution requires that the proceeds from the sale must be used to pay off state debt.
It is getting to the point that our elected officials consider themselves to be the ruling class who can do anything they want.
